Summer...or something like it

Summer has made no bones about rolling into these parts quite early and it has shown no signs of giving up its warm hold over us. So I shrug my shoulders, shout 'bring it on', and try to soak up every ounce of outdoors one can reasonably manage in a single weekend. Here's a snapshot of what we were able to cram into a single Sunday - whew!
Tadpole fishing in the Maitland
Treasure hunting at the flea market
Cooling off at the splash pad
'Aww, but it's not dark yet!'

this moment

Inspired by soulemama.
From Soule Mama: {this moment} - A Friday (oops, I'm a little late!!) ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you're inspired to do the same, leave a link to your 'moment' in the comments for all to find and see.

Happy Mama's Day!

No, in case you were wondering, my floors haven't been cleaned in a while. Dusting? Ditto. Laundry? It'll get folded some day. Just not this day. This day was my day to enjoy all of the things I love about being a mother - and they don't include dirt and dust and laundry. They include watching my boys run free on a beautiful, but chilly, sunny day (Yes, that's Finny wearing his winter coat and toque it was so cold out today!). They include giving my boys the opportunities to explore the beautiful things in this world, like Meeting Place Organic Farm where we enjoyed the afternoon touring the farm, learning that eggs don't just magically appear in the grocery store, getting up close and personal with some very friendly pigs, and buying their favourite apple butter directly from the hands that made it! It means so much to me to have this time with my kids for I know that dust will always be a part of my life, and I suspect that I will always be clawing my way through mountains of laundry, but these are the moments that won't last forever and I intend to soak up every one of them that I can! Happy Mother's Day!

Rainy day indulgence

What do you get when you mix sugar, food colouring and probably one of the best vegan sugar cookie recipes ever? In hindsight, I might say it was a bit of a rainy-day disaster since we couldn't really go outside to run off all that sugar. But really, when you're stuck inside on a rainy day, what could be better than making your own sugar cookies, topping them with colours-of-the-rainbow icing, and over-indulging on these yummy treats? I mean, really?

The recipe came from one of my favourite sites: Let's get Baked with Matt and Dave. It's a great Canadian radio show that mixes two of my favourite things - music and food! But best of all, the recipes are vegan which works well for this dairy and egg-free house! Give it a listen!
